Practice Areas

John Barry has become a cornerstone of the law profession in New Brunswick, serving both province and country with excellence and skill. Areas of expertise include civil litigation, administrative law, professional negligence, insurance law, product liability claims, personal injury, malpractice, and the defence of medical negligence related hospital claims.

Professional Experience

John received his B.A. in 1965 and his B.C.L. in 1966 from the University of New Brunswick and was admitted to the New Brunswick bar in the same year. In 1977, he was appointed Queen's Counsel. John and his brother, David, along with another partner established Barry and O'Neil (now known as Barry Spalding) in 1981. Throughout his legal career, he has held numerous positions and served on several legal committees including both provincial and national membership in the Canadian Bar Association and chair of its Communication and Health Law committees.

John's expertise in the health field led to his appointment as chair of the Legal Counsel Section of the Federation Medical Licensing Authorities of Canada in 2000 and in 2006. His tireless work as a Council Member for the Law Society of New Brunswick has spanned four terms, including groundbreaking work as co-chairman on the Integration of the Practice of Law in the Two Official Languages Committee.

John is a as Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, one of the most prestigious legal organizations in North America. He currently serves as Chair of the Atlantic Provinces Committee of the American College of Trial Lawyers,

Outside the Office

John P. Barry is a true community leader who has freely given of his time and energy to a number of advocacy groups at the local, provincial and national levels including founding president of The New Brunswick Kidney Foundation and the Canadian Red Cross. John is also a past chairman of the Planning Advisory Committee for the City of Saint John and can be frequently heard providing legal commentary for CBC Radio's "Mainstreet" program.

John is married to Charlene Barry, a local artist and art teacher. They have seven children and eleven grandchildren.
