Practice Areas

Howard Spalding is a distinguished litigator, with particular focus on commercial litigation, transportation law, construction, municipal, environmental law, torts, as well as personal injury and insurance law.

Professional Experience

Howard received his B.A. in 1976, his LL.B. in 1978 from the University of New Brunswick, and was a Beaverbrook scholar. Admitted to the bar in 1978, he worked for two other firms before joining Barry Spalding, where he has been a partner since 1982. Howard is affiliated, and has held numerous roles, with a number of legal organizations including the Saint John Law Society, the Canadian Bar Association and its New Brunswick branch, and the New Brunswick Law Society. He has also chaired and presented seminars for the Health Law sector, Municipal Law and Litigation section of the New Brunswick Law Society. Howard is past Chair of the Litigation Subsection of the Canadian Bar Association and has been an instructor at the Bar Admission Course on Litigation and Insurance Law for the past 15 years.

Outside the Office

Howard, like many of his colleagues at Barry Spalding, holds an active record of community involvement. He has worked as president of the Hampton Area Chamber of Commerce; is a Founding Member of the Hampton Rotary Club; was a Director of the Hampton Youth Center; Director and Past Chair of the Dr. V. A. Snow Centre; Past Director of the United Way of Greater Saint John; and Past Committee Member for the United Way Allocations Committee. Currently, he is Chair of the  Dr. V.A. Snow Centre Foundation.

Howard and his wife Donna have seven children.
