Practice Areas

J David Barry is a nationally recognized practitioner of business law. His special expertise includes corporate finance and securities law, information technology, privacy and related intellectual property issues.

Professional Experience

Born in Saint John, David received his B.Sc. (Honours) in Mathematics from Saint Francis Xavier University in 1966 and his M.Sc. (Computer Science) from the University of Alberta in 1968. While lecturing in Computer Science at the University of New Brunswick, he decided to enter law school and obtained his LL.B in 1972. David was admitted to the bar later that same year.

In 1981, after practicing law for nine years, he, his brother John and others decided to form the firm now known as Barry Spalding. David was awarded the distinction of Queen’s Council in 1989. Professionally, he has held an active interest in the area of information technology and his IT professional memberships have included the Canadian Information Processing Society, the Association for Computing Machinery and the Canadian Society for the Advancement of Legal Technology. In 1994 David was awarded the Dr. Stuart S. Peter’s award by the Atlantic Provinces’ Chamber of Commerce in recognition of outstanding leadership in fostering trade development in Atlantic Canada.

David is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Saint John Law Society, the Law Society of New Brunswick, the International Association of Privacy Professionals, the Canadian IT Lawyers Association and the Canadian Tax Foundation.  He has served on the councils of the Law Society of New Brunswick, the Canadian Bar Association New Brunswick Branch and the national organization, is a past governor of the Canadian Tax Foundation, and is currently a director of CanLII as the Law Society of New Brunswick’s nominee.

He has presented a number of seminars for the legal profession as well as organizations and associations who continue to seek his assistance and advice in his areas of expertise as well as technical innovations related to the practice of law.

Outside the Office

David has always been active in his community. Some of his contributions include: President and director of the Saint John Board of Trade; Chairman and director of Enterprise Saint John, the community economic and development agency; President and director of the Saint John Cooperative Supply Depot Inc.; President and director of the New Brunswick Museum; Governor of the United Way of Saint John; President and director of the YM-YWCA Saint John; director and Vice-President of Saint John and NB Associations of Community Living: director of Housing Alternatives Inc.; Vice President and director of Family Services Saint John; director of Saint John Learning Exchange and director of St. Rose Parish Community Housing Inc.

He is currently the Chairperson and a director of Saint John Airport Inc., southern New Brunswick's regional airport; and Chairperson and a director of the St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation, and a Co-Chairperson of the Foundation's capital campaign.

David and his wife, Jane, are the proud parents of five boys. They also have six grandchildren.
