On June 14, 2010, BARRY SPALDING filed class actions in New Brunswick against
Officers/Directors of St. Anne-Nackawic Pulp Company Ltd. and its
holding company, St. Anne Industries Ltd., and the Superintendent of
Pensions for the Province of New Brunswick. These actions pertain to
the administration of the pension plans for retired union and
non-union workers.
A class action is a lawsuit in which the claims of many people who have common but not identical interests are decided in a single court proceeding brought by one or more plaintiffs who act as representatives of the class. A class action avoids multiple individual lawsuits, allows the court to resolve the claims in a reasonable, efficient and cost-effective way, increases access to justice by eliminating economic barriers which prevent people from pursuing litigation, and ensures that people with similar claims are treated similarly.
BARRY SPALDING is leading a team of lawyers from other provinces,
including: Eugene J. Mockler, Q.C., of Fredericton, NB, Ward K.
Branch, of Vancouver, BC, and Clint G. Docken, Q.C., of Calgary, AB.
